Single Leg Stiff Deadlift Demo - Personal Training Melbourne - TK Bands

http://www.intafitness.com.au . Mr. Inta-Fitness demos a single leg stiff deadlift. This is 40 kg in total including the bar.

This is a glute/hamstring exercise primarily but the lower back, core, calfs, ankle and foot feel the pain too :-) This was the last exercise for the day so I'm a bit tired (that's my excuse). This is very tough but if you can master it - you need not waste your time with pathetic leg curls for hamstrings which are not functional and engage few other muscles. The trick with this one is to keep a slight bend in the planted knee and drop the hips back slightly as you lower yourself to the ground keeping the back straight & not rounding the shoulders - also try to keep your weight on the heel of the planted foot and not on the ball/toes.

Barbell Deadlifts Demo - Personal Trainer Melbourne TK Waistband

http://www.intafitness.com.au . Right, this is more of a demonstration of what not to do. My ego was bigger here than my ability and the technique is very poor on most of the reps! This is 120 kg deadlift. As you can see I have too much flexion through the hips and I am leaning forward as I lift when I should be keeping a straight back. This could cause injury and is highly discouraged and I recommend you do not lift like this! Basically it means the weight is too heavy and I should have gone down in weight to get the proper form. Next time I will record a video of the way it should be done and I will add it here.

The reason I kept going with this is that my back felt ok and and I was bracing my core 100 % before every lift - otherwise I could have injured myself. Also, I wear the TK waistband (black band around my waist) which provides heat to my lower back and core and really helps protect this area and when I wear this my lower back feels safe (even though in this video it looks like it is in danger).

TK Waistband - Burns Stubborn Stomach Fat & Acts As A Waist & Lower Back Support Belt!

The TK waistband is also used as a fat loss aid as it has a great thermogenic effect around the midsection thus encouraging fat loss from area.

Handstand Push-Ups demo with static hold to finish. Personal Trainer Melbourne

http://www.intafitness.com.au . Mr. Inta-Fitness demos handstand push-ups (cheating slightly as my feet rest against the wall).

I love this for shoulders but it does cause a spike in blood pressure due to the fact that I am upside down and contracting muscles :-) So, not recommended for beginners.. Also, there is a risk that you could fall on your head & hurt your neck so be careful & learn how to roll out of this if your muscles fail.

If you could only do one form of exercise to lose weight what should you do?

Hi Everyone,

I recently asked my subscribers and clients for questions about health & fitness that they really want the answers to. I had plenty of replies and have got plenty of questions to answer. I will make my way through them all over the next couple of weeks. Here is the first one:

If you could only do one form of exercise to lose weight what should you do?

You should exercise your self restraint and stop shovelling too much food into your mouth - this will definately lead to weight loss - haha. Sorry, I'm not funny I know.

Well, this is a tough one for me as I can't honestly say that there one type in particular and if I had my way everyone would be doing a combination of resistance training & cardio-vascular (aerobic) training. Why, because one stimulates muscle activity & tones muscles which boosts metabolism for 48-72 hrs resulting in more calories burned throughout those days and the other burns fat calories whilst you do it. I hope you know which is which :-)

But , I guess I should answer the question so here it is . Absolutely anything that makes you sweat and sweat lots. Yes, you too Girls. Never break a sweat? Try a boxing class or a spinning/cycle class and you will.. Here are 2 options , an outdoor & an indoor:

Outdoors
  • Running is an all time favourite weight loss activity. Why, you are carrying your weight around against the pull of gravity and this leads to a large consumption of calories thus resulting in lots of flab being burned. You can do it practically anywhere and don't need any special equipment - making it convenient and therefore less excuses for you to not do it. Start slow with a walk/jog and then progress to a jog/run and then to a run. When you can run 30 mins non-stop at good pace (this means not so slow that a powerwalking mum over takes you with her stroller) then you should add sprints or/and hills to the mixture. By the way, if you cannot walk/jog then just walk and then walk/fast walk, just try to do a little faster or longer each time and you will soon be running.

Indoors

  • In my opinion you can't beat Spinning/Cycle classes. They are high energy and drive the heart rate high and then lower it again . This has been shown to burn more fat than a steady consistent pace and gets you bloody fit in the process, meaning a strong & healthy heart as well as a lean physique. If you have not done this class before you will need to start slow and follow your instructor's guidelines. As soon as you are able - push yourself hard & watch the fat melt away. By the way, I know some of you hate cycling so you should do a high energy class like Body Attack or similar, as always start slow and work at your level of fitness, if you feel faint or dizzy - immediately panic and shout at the instructor for help - NO , don't do that - i'm kidding! Don't worry, just stop straight away and lie down with your feet up against the wall at about 45 degrees if you can - this helps blood flow back to the heart. Now just concentrate on your breathing - big breaths in through the nose (fill the lungs) and slow exhale through the mouth & repeat - you'll be fine in no time at all.

Ok, so that's about it for this question. I could go on and on but I'll leave it here. You'll notice I haven't mentioned resistance training/weights even though at the start I said everyone should do it. That's because weights routines will vary for different people and you should not just go to the gym and do whatever. Yes, we all need weights but we need structured routines and proper guidance. See a good Personal Trainer to have a proper program designed for you.

Bye for now, your fitness friend,

Mr. Inta-Fitness

Dangerous Exercise To Avoid In The Gym!

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick post to warn you of a very dangerous exercise that is being performed in gyms. You MUST NOT do this exercise ever! Check it out below:

HAHAHA, sorry - I couldn't resist , who doesn't need a good laugh every day.
Laughter is medicine - remember that! And, you get a mini ab workout too :-)

Ok, seriously though . This demonstrates the importance of safety in the gym and being careful about what you do and how you do it. This dill was not seriously hurt but he could have caused a painful injury which would have prevented him from continuing with his exercise program. These stupid machines are unnecessary and a waste of time. GOD gave you all the tools you need and a pretty good musculo-skeletal system to work them so don't go looking for the next amazing machine to use.

So, before starting a new exercise program make sure you get a proper fitness assessment and then make sure you are shown a safe and functional program that starts with the basics and then progress at a steady pace. If you are not sure if you are doing the right things in the right way then I suggest you invest a few bucks in a Personal Trainer and get it right from the start. Not only will you get better results but you'll prevent injuring yourself and injuries are a major cause of why people quit their exercise programs.

So, train safe, progress steadily, don't overdo it! Consistency first - intensity later :-)

Mr. Inta-Fitness Talks Multivitamins , Do You Really Need Them?

Hi Everybody,

I'm always asking my customers & clients if they take a multi-vitamin and more often than not the response I get is 'NO'. Hmm, I think , so then I say 'ok, so you must be eating at least 5-7 serves of organic fruits & vegetables/salads everyday along with good quality wholegrains/lean proteins/raw nuts and wholesome carbohydrates which have hardly undergone any processing (think brown rice, lentils, sweet potatoes etc) - right? Well, I bet not but thats what it would take to ensure you are getting the right balance of vitamins & minerals on a daily basis!

So, in my opinion , everyman & everywoman should be taking a good multivitamin/mineral suppplement on a daily basis. Men should take a man's formula and women should take a women's formula as we have different micronutrient requirements. Why should you bother when you go to the toilet and pee it all out - right? Wrong! Think of it as nutritional insurance, providing your body with a back up system for times when you aren't eating the perfect balance of healthy nutritional foods everyday, which we are all guilty of :-( You will only pee out what you don't need and I gaurantee you that you will notice a difference in the way you feel - especially if you excercise regulary because regular exercise will deplete your personal stores of vitamins and minerals and if you don't put them back then you will feel flat or lethargic and even get sick easier as your immune system struggles to function optimally. I have many clients whom have added a decent multi to their routine and were amazed at the difference in how they feel and perform - much better that is!

What if I already eat a very healthy balanced diet full of fruits , vege's , good quality unprocessed carbs, salads, lean proteins , raw nuts etc? Well, that's great and keep up the good work but the truth of the matter is that even the best diet these days is probably lacking in key nutrients due to the fact that the food is being harvested from lands that have been leached of their nutrient content through decades of farming. Not to mention the chemical sprays that the foods have been drowned in! So, I am one of these people who eats this way and I still take a mult-ivitamin for piece of mind....

So, get a decent multi-vitamin into you daily and you'll be sure to be giving your body a boost in the battle against the evils of poor breakfasts, lunch's, dinners, pollution, alcohol, stress, lack of sleep & exercise and not enough fruits & vegetables. Oh, by the way I would prefer you ate the healthy balanced diet and took the vitamins for insurance - is that wishful thinking?

When I say a good multi-vitamin , I mean one that has sufficient levels of ingredients and comes from a trusted manufacturer. My personal favourites are the 'Swiss' brand and the one I use personally is Opti-Men for the guys or Opti-Women for the girls which we stock in our store. Other than that the general rule of thumb is don't buy from the supermarket - go to the health food store, they are better qaulity with more active ingredients and more mg's per serve.

Have a great week & eat a little less & move a little more :-)

Horley's Ripped Factors or Sculpt For Women's Fat Loss?

Just a quick post in reponse to a question I was asked recently from a customer. She wanted to know which product was better for fat loss - Horley's Sculpt or Horley's Ripped? I work out 4-5 days a week at the gym doing a mixture of cardio and weight training, weigh 57kg and would like to lose another 2kg and gain more muscletone. Would like to know out of the above 2 products which would be the most beneficial for me to ensure I am ordering/using the right one!So, here is my take on it:

A valid question , allow me to set your mind at ease. Horley's are a great brand in general and there products are of a very high quality but unfortunately they could not help but jump on the 'let's tell women they need a different shaping protein' bandwagon. Thus, they came out with the SCULPT - a low cost product in a small cute container marketed at women claiming to be a women's shaping protein. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SHAPING PROTEIN - sorry to break it you..., muscle shape is genetic and tone is dependant on proper resistance training. And, as for women needing a different protein all I will say is; do you see a women's meat section in the deli or at the butcher? I don't think so! Do women have different nutritional requirements to men - absolutely yes , but we are talking micro-nutrients (vitamins & minerals), not macro-nutrients (protein).

So , enough of my ranting, bottom line is the Horleys' Ripped is a better product and your training is pretty much the right mixture of what you need to be doing. Make sure you are pushing yourself hard and mixing high intensity cardio with low intensity on alternate days. Make sure your cardio is done after your weights if you do them on the same day and for at least 40 mins.

Sculpt has the cheaper whey protein concentrate as the first ingredient and this is followed by soy protein isolate . The Ripped Factors is the highest quality whey protein isolate only and thus is the best protein you can take with the highest bioavailability - meaning your muscles will use more of it to re-build and repair.

Ok , I hope this helped and makes sense.

All the best,

Mr. Inta-Fitness
